Composting, Recycling & Gardening For Kids

It is vital to our future to include the children in our efforts to protect and restore the environment. The best way to teach children and encourage them to make environmental awareness a way of life for them, is to make it fun. Check back here often for fun ideas and links just for our children.

          Gardening Projects

          1. Use empty cardboard egg crates to plant seeds, when the seeds are ready to transplant, cut the sections apart and plant the whole section. The egg crate will help the seedling retain water and will deteriorate with time.
          2. Turn empty plastic milk jugs into birdfeeders. Cut out a large section of one side, about 1 1/2" up from the bottom of the jug. A stick can be inserted into a hole below the opening (for a perch) and a string run through 2 holes in the top (to hang the feeder).
          3. Use pine cones, paper towel rolls or tissue rolls to make birdfeeders. For the cardboard rolls, punch a two holes in the top, directly across from each other. Run a string through them, about 18" long should work, for hanging. For the pine cone, tie the string to the base of the cone. Coat the birdfeeder thoroughly with peanut butter and roll in birdseed. Hang from branches outside your windows so you can watch the birds eat.
